WALNUT SHELLS DECORATIONS – IN A DIFFERENT WAY
Walnut shells are a great natural material for creating a variety of decorations and ornaments… When I was a little girl, I was always fascinated by “babies in a walnut cradle” and even my increasing age could not stop me loving all sorts of Christmas walnut decorations, which I found absolutely fascinating. They created a calm and warm feeling of home, and perhaps a fading spell of ancient times. I was also inspired by many folk and natural pieces such as half shells stuffed with blueprint, moss or other natural ingredients.
At the beginning, my walnut-making was primarily devoted to retro bits and I gradually began combining shells with a cotton lace. Consequently, perhaps thanks to my innate love for tradition but also for everything “non-traditional”, I felt a need to breathe in a new, more modern look into the nuts. And to start making the walnut decorations in a different way…
This is a brand under which I make special walnut shell decorations combining uncommon and non-used materials such as cotton, metallic, antique lace, braids, frills, fringes, etc. Since the market is overwhelmingly dominated by walnut decorations in a rustic and a retro design, I focus more and above all on an “antique” and a modern design.
I have been working on these small decorations for several years, with a lot of popularity in Austria and the USA. In 2018, I decided to create some backgrounds in the form of this brand and give them an opportunity to make people happy in the country of their origin, the Czech Republic.
The nut No. 1 is a representative and a “Decornuts” characterizing nut, which is also represented in the Industrial Design Database of the Czech Republic.
WHAT EXACTLY “DECORNUTS” ARE ?
By a DECORNUT we understand a decoration or an ornament, or if you also want – a “dressed walnut shell”, mostly of a hanging character. Although we can see it as a Christmas decoration, it can beautifully be used to decorate a dry branch in the interior, a mirror, a handle, an old picture or even a handbag. Fantasy is not limited!
Have you heard this expression for the first time? No wonder – I did not give my walnut mini-loves this name until January of this year (2018). I honestly searched among all sorts of variants and finally, with a clear conscience, ended up with a compound composed of two words:
DECOR (decorative) + NUTS (nuts) = DECORNUTS (decorative nuts)
Yes, I know that the term “nuts” refers to nuts in general in English, and not only to walnuts or royal nuts. However, as a freelance creature, it sounds good to me and also I’m getting more and more sure that this title suits the nuts dressed in rare materials the best.
Starting with a daring question…
What phrase do you use the most often?
“I’m in a hurry” ???
Me too, I used to desperately over say this phrase before; in the hurried times of today, one cannot be surprised … Forcing myself away from a commercial environment in which I lived for some time and the fascinating processes of creation have opened my mind to perceiving the world and reality in a different way. First of all, I have slowed down …
And a bit of that “slowing down” I’m giving to you, in every piece of DECORNUT made with LOVE, CARE, AND TIME, which is mine:
… REVOLT against the hurry of today’s times, materialism, inferiority, quantity …
… a bit of POETRY, NATURE, and WARMNESS coming into your home …
… HEART AFFAIR and I hope, soon, yours too
CREATION of my FIRST “decornut”:
This “fateful” event happened a few years ago – we had a cottage in a remote village, in a quiet and clean countryside. It was just before Christmas and I found out that I did not have enough Christmas decorations for a Christmas tree, being preoccupied with concerns and care of my two little children. It was terribly frosty and snowy outdoors, and I did not want to go out in this weather, so I decided to use a more comfortable and a more creative solution to the “problem”.
On the wooden floor of our attic there was a real sea of walnuts, which were directly invoking to create. By some special control of fate I opened an old chest and found a beautiful cotton lace in it, left by the original owners. I looked at it, then I looked back on the walnut – and the idea was in the world and a moment later my first decoration was there as well!
Here it is – you can certainly imagine how good it looked on a Christmas tree, accompanied by members of my numerous family!
I, DECORNUT the “FIRST”!
WHO IS “ELA” signed on each package?
ELA is nobody else but me, MichaELA. Most of my loved ones commonly call me Miška or Míša. When I was about 10 (back in1987), my dad played me a song by France Gall – Ella, ellel’a, which caught my heart from the very first tones, and its melodies uplifted me for years over the complexities of reality, up to the heights in which a world for its own is being shaped. Moreover, during the time of totalitarianism, in which short names such as Jana, Dana, Lenka were fashionable, Ela gave me, at least psychologically, a feeling that the “antique sounding” Michaela could be “boosted”.
ELA is therefore my “second” inspirational myself, without whom I would barely bring the decorations (and all my craft) into life.
